DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN ANGEL?
Searching for the perfect birthday gift can sometimes bring you interesting new acquaintances. While I was walking down Vlaška thinking what to surprise my close friend for her birthday with, I glanced at the window of an atelier. I made a few more steps before I realized that, among other things, I saw unusual angels in the window. I came back because it was the birthday gift I was looking for, and the beauty and the uniqueness of these angels made me ask the artist where she drew inspiration from.
When my husband and I travelled to Italy, I saw these very interesting things washed ashore. I usually find inspiration everywhere around me, and these things looked so beautiful that I couldn’t let them stay there. So we gathered that at the Italian coast at 6 a.m., and when we came back to Zagreb, I made them into angels. When I ran out of ‘Italian’ material, I started looking for new supplies at Sljeme, says Ana Barbić Katičić, academic painter. This artist has had an unusual path. “I actually finished Law School; I worked as a lawyer, passed the bar exam… the idea was to paint only on the weekends. But that didn’t work, she laughs and continues, I got into the Academy when I was 27”.
Today she only does art, which she approaches as any other job. “I don’t wait to be inspired; I work every day. Sometimes I simply come to the atelier and sort out the paint, make preparations or something like that. Art is part of my every day and a possibility to immerse myself into a nicer world. What I love most is the fact that everyone can have this possibility, regardless of the type of art… Everyone can find a moment of pleasure for himself through art”, says Ana.
Even though painting is her primary form of expression, she likes to do other things as well: her concrete lamps and tape recorder chandeliers are well known; she likes to decorate spaces, be it though painting or any other vision, and she and her colleague Nikolina Šimunović made a real boom with furniture painting a few years ago. If you’re interested to see what it all looks like up close, you’ll find Ana at Vlaška 79 every day, so drop by for a chat and to enjoy art everywhere around you.
