MANDALA – A PLACE OF PLEASURE FOR ALL SENSES
I’m sure that the best things in Zagreb hide in – courtyards, passage ways, building entry ways. Like in a sci-fi movie, at one point you’re catapulted from the city crowds into a peaceful oasis. This happened to me when I visited hair salon Mandala for the first time.
Once you step into the passage way at Jurišićeva 21, enter the building in the courtyard, and go down to the basement, you don’t expect to find a place full of light and interesting details, decorated with special care, with a terrace where a wild plum tree has already spread in full bloom.
You’ve entered an oasis for the body and the soul (
OK, hair ), where you’re welcomed by Vlasta, Darko, and… a special experience.
Vlasta and Darko are hairstyling aficionados and lovers of life in general – and this definitely gives this salon a special dimension, clearly seen in every detail they took into consideration while decorating it. They both have many years of experience, and they recently entered their business “marriage”, wishing to create an ambient in which the clients would feel comfortable and relaxed and in which they’d be able to realize their common wishes, ideas, passions, and love – for their work and life.
A renowned career
Vlasta Menges worked for a renowned Zagreb salon for over 13 years as a color director, while cutting hair is, as she says, her first love. She has attended various seminars in Croatia and abroad and held education programs of her own. Meanwhile, Darko learned the tricks of the trade at his mother’s hair salon in Čakovec. He soon opened his own salon, but his desire to advance in the business led him to Zagreb. As the team leader and idea creator, he devised numerous collections in which he presented the work of his team Backstage in various local and global magazines. He was part of the extended Matrix team and held education seminars for Davines. It mostly took place within the leading Croatian hairstyling festival Hairstyle News, and he still visits London in search of new knowledge and skills, just like Vlasta.
Love towards art
“We are particularly inspired by various forms of art. We have come up with all kinds of interesting details that we’ve implemented into our space. I restored many furniture pieces on my own”, Darko says with pride. “It was important for us to create a surrounding that was in harmony with people and nature.”
“Our goal is to organize theme weeks”, adds Vlasta. “We’ll have literature week (poetry reading, short story reading, introducing the works of young local and foreign authors), music week (music sessions, concerts, old vinyl exchanges…), life enjoyment week. We’ll also have workshops and lectures on food, health, self-awareness, psychology, creating fractals and mandalas, astrology, and many other alternative methods that will enrich our lives.
The salon is also a small gallery. While you’re waiting for your dye to work, you’ll have the chance to check out paintings hung on the salon walls. The exhibition changes every two months, including both famous and less-known artists.
You can currently see the exhibition of academic artist Petra Lidija Ševeljević and tattoo artist Nikka Dott, and soon you’ll be able to see an exhibition titled “Heralds of Spring” by artist Valerija Pavić. The opening is scheduled for Saturday, 19 March, at 7 p.m. If you’re more of a fan of the written word, you can amuse yourself with interesting titles on the shelves, obtained by Vlasta and Darko through their cooperation with the Najbolje knjige (“Best Books”) portal. If you like some of them, you can even borrow them.
“We’re open to new ideas and forms of cooperation; we are prone to innovation and changes, and everyone who wishes to bring their ideas to life is welcome here”, say Vlasta and Darko.
In their work, they try to use products with (as many possible) natural ingredients. They recycle the containers they use and the waste produced in their work. The first of many ideas of “paying back” to nature is investing a kuna from each customer into reforestation.
And let’s not forget! Vlasta and Darko are masters of their trade, which our team has experienced on its own scalp! See you at Mandala!
