A MYSTICAL FAIRY-TALE AT THE ESPLANADE
I love December. For a moment, December gives me a chance to forget about the dreary daily life and I shamelessly indulge in all things fairy-tale this city has to offer: sausages, fritters, manic last-minute shopping, mulled wine, crowds, pre-Christmas parties, traffic jams… (OK, not exactly traffic jams, but that sort of goes with the flow).
Two nights ago, I had the chance to participate in a special fairy-tale – in the true sense of this word. Đurđica (Vorkapić), designer and innovator – whom I admire immensely – invited Nataša and me to her enchanting Hippy Garden fashion tale. Place: the Emerald Hall of Hotel Esplanade; the rest: a surprise. The invitation instructed: wear black!
Fairy-tales are lovely when they happen, but they require preparation. Even though our daily life is more akin to Snow White’s toil, we couldn’t really count on a pumpkin coach to materialize in front of our building. I had to go look for a magical wand in the form of extraordinary brushes in the hands of the best make-up artist in the world, Simona Antonović. A combination of black trousers and black tunic was spiced up with the jewellery of my friend Dunja Gjoni – it took some time for me to decide between corals and pearls, but the pearls won by a whisker. It’s easy when you have your own personal jeweller (hahaha). At least that.:-)
In front of the Emerald Hall, we are welcomed by hostesses offering towels and hand baths. I mean… OK, I know that viruses are going rampant, but… We enter the hall (it always leaves me breathless), and followed by strokes of musical virtuosos, as if we were in a film noir, we are seated at a large round table. Everyone is wearing black, candles are flickering, silverware is clinking. We are part of the fairy-tale as well. Pure mysticism. The performance begins.
A fashion, musical, dance performance… Between the march-pasts of Marquise models, Đurđica’s collection of exclusive, unique dresses inspired by the age of reign of the nobles, almost imperceptible waiters serve the Black “Marquise Maestoso” Menu: crunchy shrimp, kanafeh, and citrus cream as the entrée. The main course: veal cheeks in a thick Port sauce, horn of plenty ragout. And the desert: macarons, wild fruit and dark chocolate mousse. We drink full-bodied red wine and enjoy.
The sensuality, etherealness, and self-confidence of the Hippy woman. Silk and brocade. The sophisticated, elegant silhouette. We all wanted to be princesses. That doesn’t change with age. At the end of the fashion show, we are all surprised at the appearance of a beautiful white Lippizaner horse. No prince in sight, but never mind… at the Emerald Hall, even the horse will do. The high-point of the evening.
We all greet the designer with an ecstatic applause.
After mingling a bit outside, we leave richer for another marvellous, fairy-tale experience.
