THE BEST CRESCENT ROLL IN TOWN

I admit, it’s hard for me to resist buns and rolls (and you can definitely see that). Croissants, crescent and other rolls, donuts – I am magically attracted to them. When it comes to rolls, it’s like I go all Glen Close on Michael Douglas. Even if I’m dieting, which I’ve been doing for the better part of my life, I can’t keep my fingers away. I’d rather have a single crescent roll than an entire vegetarian meal. Rolls are living proof that I’ll never be able to lose those 10 pounds. The baking industry in Zagreb has simply blossomed in the last few years (probably because I’m a genuine template they built their business on).

But if you’re not a true Zagrebian, you probably can’t have heard (or read) about Milk Bar Sršek. Come to think of it, what venue calls itself a milk bar nowadays? The city lifestyle portals that cover every fancy opening of a new bistro definitely don’t mention it. The old Sršek in Andrije Žaje Street is near Dom Sportova and it’s quite plainly decorated. The other Sršek is a bit more modern. It is located in Zavrtnica, and the location was carefully chosen – the visitors are mainly workers in the famous industrial ghetto and their clients. It is located right across the fitness center, and we’ll never know what kind of risk the owner took by placing it right there. I wouldn’t really bet that a dedicated fitness buff wouldn’t dig into a delicious pie after sweating on the track. The ladies that serve the customers at Sršek kind of look like your dad’s cousin or a neighbour, and I can’t help but feel that they always struggle a bit when they have to use the computer cashier (or maybe the cashiers are simply not user friendly?).

But forget about all that, because Milk Bar Sršek has excellent salty and sweet pies, strudels, cakes and rolls. The ingredients are really like the ones you’d find at your father’s cousin’s kitchen, the pumpkin pies look like your grandma made them – and they are equally delicious.

However, the queen of our story is the Sršek crescent roll. The best in town, by far. And they’re always warm since they sell immediately the minute they come out of the oven. This may be topped only by the home-made roll…
